Beyond Traditional Biochar
Biochar has become a global symbol of circular agriculture, improving soil health while locking carbon in the ground. Yet conventional biochar has faced one persistent problem: alkalinity. Most biochars are highly basic, which means farmers can only apply about 2 percent of total soil content before yields begin to decline due to pH imbalance. Towing’s model also closes the loop on waste and carbon. By using plant residues, livestock manure, and sewage sludge that would otherwise be incinerated, Soratan Biochar helps avoid direct CO₂ emissions. During pyrolysis, much of the carbon is fixed into solid form, making the process inherently carbon-negative.
This fixed carbon can be quantified and verified under Japan’s and international carbon credit frameworks, creating a new class of soils that can generate tradable emission credits.
