Beyond Traditional Biochar

Biochar has become a global symbol of circular agriculture, improving soil health while locking carbon in the ground. Yet conventional biochar has faced one persistent problem: alkalinity. Most biochars are highly basic, which means farmers can only apply about 2 percent of total soil content before yields begin to decline due to pH imbalance. This limits scalability in mainstream agriculture.

The Neutral-pH Advantage

Unlike traditional alkaline biochars, Soratan’s acidity is close to neutral. This allows farmers to apply larger quantities without disrupting the soil’s natural balance, which is typically between pH 5.5 and 6.5. Even when distribution is uneven, Soratan maintains crop-friendly conditions and prevents the localized yield drops that often occur with conventional biochar.

Field results from Towing and collaborating farmers have confirmed that Soratan improves yields even when applied beyond the traditional 2 percent limit.

Towing’s Smart Artificial Soil Technology

At the core of Soratan’s success is Towing’s High-Performance Soil Technology, developed in collaboration with Japan’s National Agriculture and Food Research Organization (NARO). This process combines biochar pretreatment and microbial cultivation, embedding beneficial microorganisms directly into the porous structure of the charcoal.

Once mixed with organic fertilizers and managed under controlled conditions, this “living soil” can decompose organic matter far more efficiently. In practical terms, it allows farmers to create ultra-high-quality soil in about one month, compared to the three to five years that are typically required to rehabilitate land such as vineyards or paddy fields.

From Waste to Revenue: The Carbon Credit Dimension

Towing’s model also closes the loop on waste and carbon. By using plant residues, livestock manure, and sewage sludge that would otherwise be incinerated, Soratan Biochar helps avoid direct CO₂ emissions. During pyrolysis, much of the carbon is fixed into solid form, making the process inherently carbon-negative.

This fixed carbon can be quantified and verified under Japan’s and international carbon credit frameworks, creating a new class of soils that can generate tradable emission credits. For farmers and project developers, this means new revenue potential not only from improved yields but also from verified carbon sequestration.
