Buena Vista Biomass Power (BVBP) Plant

AI demand is exploding, but US data centers are already nearing their limits. Vacancy rates in top markets are at historic lows at about 3% nationally, leaving little room for new growth. At the same time, the US has more than 180 biomass power plants, but almost 2/3rds of them have been shuttered, as legacy contracts expired and market priorities shifted.

These closures were driven not by technology failure, but by economics, as biomass couldn’t compete with subsidized solar and wind once their long-term utility contracts ended. As a result, vast amounts of dispatchable, grid-connected infrastructure now sits idle, just as AI’s exponential growth collides with severe capacity and power bottlenecks.

NewYork GreenCloud (NYGC) is reviving these facilities, starting with the Buena Vista Biomass Power (BVBP) plant in Ione, CA. In partnership with BucSha Energy, the site is being re-powered as a carbon-negative pyrolysis facility, delivering behind-the-meter electricity to an on-site, liquid-cooled AI data center with long-term hosting agreements already in place. By transforming biomass into carbon-negative energy, biochar and monetizable credits, the project not only restores stranded assets but also qualifies for Investment Tax Credits (ITCs), making BVBP a scalable model for powering AI with climate-positive infrastructure.
